Bot Settings: Bot Identification

Last updated July 4, 2026

Bot Identification is the first section of the edit bot form. It names the bot, picks the account it trades in, assigns its strategy, and sets whether it is enabled.

Settings in this section

The Bot Identification section with Bot Name, Trading Account, Strategy Assignment, and Bot Status controls
The Bot Identification section as it appears at the top of the form.

Bot Name

A free-text name for the bot. The name is how the bot is labeled everywhere in tradeSteward: the View Bots list, the Trading Dashboard, activity logs, and reports. Pick something that will still make sense when you have a page full of bots; many traders encode the symbol, structure, and entry time in the name.

Trading Account

The linked brokerage account the bot will use for trading. The dropdown lists your enabled linked accounts by their account names.

  • Accounts that have been disabled or closed appear with a Disabled Account or Closed Account prefix and cannot be selected.
  • The Trading Account cannot be changed while the bot is enabled or has open trades. The form explains it directly: disable the bot and close all open trades to select a new account.
The account lock is there to protect your records: keeping a bot's live trades tied to one account is what makes its trade history and performance reports trustworthy. If you want the same configuration in another account, use Sync Bots Across Accounts or clone the bot instead.

When you edit a Backtick position instead of a live bot, this field is replaced by Backtick Account, which groups choices under Linked Brokerage Accounts and Backtick Position Accounts and is used for conflict resolution and performance tracking in the backtest.

Strategy Assignment

Assigns the strategy group this bot's trades report under in the trade log and performance reports. The dropdown offers Create New Strategy plus each of your enabled strategies. If the bot has already traded, changing the strategy updates its historical trades to the new strategy designation, so your reporting stays consistent.

Strategies are your own profit and loss groupings, not option structures. See What Are Strategies in tradeSteward? for how they work.

Bot Status

Two buttons: Enabled or Disabled. An enabled bot trades on its own whenever account-level autotrading is on; a disabled bot never opens new trades. New bots default to Disabled so you can review everything before turning them loose. Note that your subscription plan caps how many bots can be enabled at once.

Form action buttons

The buttons beside this section (and repeated at the bottom of the form) act on the whole form:

  • Update Bot or Create Bot saves every setting on the form. Nothing changes until you save.
  • Reset returns the form to its last saved values, discarding your unsaved edits.
  • Test Run opens a test dialog that exercises the bot's current settings without saving, so you can see what it would select right now.
  • Run Backtick starts a backtest of the settings on the form. See What Is Backtick?
