Create Strategies and Assign Trades

Last updated July 17, 2026

Create your own strategies, point your bots at them, and let auto-assigned symbols file incoming trades automatically. A few minutes of setup keeps your profit and loss reporting clean from then on.

A clean setup in four steps

If you are starting fresh, this is the whole job:

  1. Create one strategy per distinct approach you trade (see What Are Strategies in tradeSteward? for how to choose the buckets).
  2. Set the Strategy Assignment on each bot so bot trades file themselves.
  3. Add Auto-Assigned Symbols for anything you trade by hand in a dedicated symbol.
  4. Watch the red badge on the Tracking menu and file whatever slips through.

The rest of this article walks each step in detail.

Do this before you enable your first bots. Assignments made now mean every trade files itself from day one, and you will never face an afternoon of sorting months of unlabeled trades.

Create a strategy

Go to Strategies then View Strategies and click the Create new strategy... row at the bottom of the table. Type a name and press Enter. The name must be unique on your account; if it duplicates an existing strategy, tradeSteward asks for a different one. New strategies start enabled, and you can add a Description right in the table.

The Create new strategy row lives at the bottom of the Strategies table.

You can rename a strategy or edit its description at any time by clicking into the field and typing. Changes save as soon as you leave the field, and a check mark confirms the update.

Assign bots to a strategy

Each bot has a Strategy Assignment field in the bot editor. Every trade the bot opens is filed under that strategy automatically, which is how most of your trades should get categorized. If you change a bot's strategy assignment, future trades follow the new assignment.

See Create a Bot for a walkthrough of the rest of the bot editor.

Auto-assign trades by symbol

For trades that do not come from a bot, you can auto-assign by symbol. On the Strategies page, click Edit in the Auto-Assigned Symbols column to open the Manage Auto-Assigned Symbols window. It lists the strategy's current symbols, lets you remove any of them, and takes new symbols one at a time. Once a symbol is listed, every future trade in that symbol is filed under the strategy automatically, which is ideal when you always trade a given underlying the same way by hand.

Auto-assigned symbols file every future trade in that symbol under the strategy.
Each symbol can only be assigned to one strategy per account, and symbol assignment only affects future trades. Existing trades are not modified. If you try to add a symbol another strategy already claims, tradeSteward tells you which strategy has it.

Assign trades by hand

Anything that slips through can be assigned from the Account Trade Log. Each trade row has a Strategy column where you can pick the right strategy, and the Bulk Strategy Assignment tool moves whole groups of trades from one strategy to another in one step: pick the old strategy, pick the new one, and click Update Trades. The Trade Log article covers the rest of that page.

If you have trades with no strategy at all, see Assign Trades Without a Strategy for the fastest way to find and file them.
